Traditionally, fenugreek seeds were primarily valued for their medicinal properties rather than culinary use. The botanical name Trigonella refers to the triangular shape of the seeds, while foenum-graecum translates to ‘Greek hay,’ indicating its historical use as animal fodder.
Fenugreek is a robust herb with light green leaves, growing to a height of 30-60 cm. It produces slender, beaked pods, each measuring 10-15 cm in length. These pods contain 10-20 small, hard, yellowish-brown seeds that are smooth and oblong, approximately 3 mm in length. Each seed has a distinct groove across one corner, giving it a unique, hooked appearance.
